33 Live: Importance of the Church

“While we are thinking about getting to Heaven, Heaven is trying to get to earth.”

This is one of the paradigm-shaking statements that Pastor Christopher shared with the students of 33 Live on Wednesday the 5th of May. You may wonder what that statement has to do with the importance of the church. I did. But then Pastor Christopher pointed out that church is a place where that purpose is filled; Heaven meets earth. There is a point of contact, and, as Jacob shared about his experience with a “point of contact” in the Bible…it’s awesome!!

As a people we are made to do five things: belong, grow, connect, serve, and pour out. All of these things are fulfilled within the church. Also, just like all of humanity is born into and needs a family, every Christian needs a church family. If Satan can get you separated and passionless, you will be robbing God of what He wants to do in the world through you.

Pastor Christopher ended the night with this challenge: “Let’s watch Heaven meet earth and watch divine movement until lives are changed…what will you die for? The Lord is asking you for your allegiance to His Kingdom and to invest who you are in His family.”

33 Live: Relationships (Real Ones!)

The Holy Spirit was thick in every aspect of 33 Live on the last Wednesday of April. He could be felt moving on people’s hearts in pre-service prayer; He spiced the worship with joy and passion as spontaneous dancing broke out to “Forever God is faithful!”; He even brought a solemn note as two students acted out the breaking of hearts in a relationship without Jesus and the restoration of hearts with Him in a skit. Which led perfectly into Pastor Christopher’s next teaching; Godly relationships.

The message came in two parts; the bad news and the good news.

The bad news is this: In today’s culture, relationships of all sorts are based on self gratification, convenience, and independence. They reek of the question “what can I get because it makes me feel good?” Because of this disease, divorce is rampant and marriage is not as common because people are simply living together or don’t see the value in a covenant like marriage.

But there is hope! The good news: Jesus has shown us the example of a covenant love, and offered it to us and to help us show it to others. It must be pointed out that covenants are different than contracts. It is not based on performance. God’s love says “I don’t care how bad you mess up. Even if you do everything possible to hurt me, I still want to love you.” That is our hope, and that is our example. The components you see in covenant love cannot be found in our media, and they are these: a deep desire to share life, obedience, selflessness, sacrifice, death to self, submission to authority, and forgiveness.

A lot different than the three we see displayed in most relationships today, huh? There is our example…and Pastor Christopher has set the challenge, praying to God “let them be the ones that change the statistics.” Amen, so be it Lord!
